Private businesses strive for growth

Last week, I hosted, along with the Industry and Parliamentary Trust (IPT), the launch of the Enterprising UK survey at the House of Lords with 15 private businesses, and 15 MPs and peers. We posed the question, How can Government and private businesses work together to grow the economy?

To give you a bit of background, in this significant piece of research we interviewed 300 UK private businesses over a wide range of industries and regions. One of the pleasing results from survey was that private businesses are reasonably optimistic. 82% of respondents say that they expect to see an improvement in the business environment within the next 5 years. After speaking to a number of business owners at the dinner and through the research, it is clear that many businesses are prepared for the coming uncertainty and that their optimism is based on a longer term approach.

I think the overall message is that private businesses are keen to grow, nationally and internationally, and are mostly in an excellent position to do so, with strong balance sheets and healthy cash balances.
