Midlands Engine Strategy - PwC comments

“It’s great to see the government has recognised growth in the Midlands is about more than just GDP. Today's strategy delivers investment to help support entrepreneurship, skills and connectivity in the region, to help the Midlands Engine fulfil its economic potential and drive growth across the country. For UK plc to be an economic success, all our regions need to be firing on all cylinders.
“We welcome the extra resources for the Midlands and translating this into action and success is the next challenge. There is little mention of transfer of powers, which would help the region strengthen its leadership role in both driving and pursuing growth that everyone can benefit from. It’s vital that business and local government work together to strengthen local leadership to drive this agenda forward in the future.
“At PwC, we are committed to helping the Midlands prosper. We continue to invest in jobs and our own infrastructure in the Midlands and other UK regions - over half of PwC's graduate roles are now outside of London."
Matthew Hammond, chairman for PwC in the Midlands, added:
“The Government’s ambitious vision for the Midlands as ‘a gateway to the global economy’ is a welcome boost to help the region’s businesses to thrive in a post-Brexit economy.
“There is a clear commitment to the whole business community from supporting businesses on a global scale through the Midlands Trade and Investment Programme, to empowering SMEs to prosper through the Midlands Engine Investment Fund. Further investment and partnerships in transport, infrastructure and skills are vital and will underpin economic growth.
“The strategy is a significant step in putting the Midlands firmly on the UK growth agenda. There is still much to capitalise upon to ensure the Midlands also prospers as an international business destination. The Midlands has an increasingly diverse and balanced sectoral presence, and in some areas a global leading edge in skills, research and development.”
